What was the name of the type transferred onto paper by drawing over?

Remember the lettering which you drew on to press the type onto the page? Can't remember what it was called?
What was that called? What was the name of the transferable type used by graphic designers? All you had to do was scribble on transfer paper and the letters would move from the transfer paper to the page. It was commonly used in design before computers.
